How to Use AI to Answer Job Application Questions
October 27, 2026 · 5 min read
Application forms ask the same kinds of questions again and again: why this company, tell us about a project, what are your salary expectations. AI can draft good answers in seconds, as long as you give it the right material and check what it writes.
Give the AI two things: your resume and the job
Generic prompts produce generic answers. The AI needs your real experience (your resume) and the specific job description. With both, it can connect what you've done to what the employer needs.
A prompt that works
"Using only the experience in my resume below, write a 5-sentence answer to the question: 'Why are you a good fit for this role?' for the job description below. Use one specific example from my resume. Don't invent anything."
What a good answer looks like
- Answers the exact question in the first sentence
- Uses one concrete example from your real experience
- Mentions something specific about the role or company
- Is short: four to six sentences for most questions
- Sounds like you. Read it aloud and change anything you wouldn't say
Questions you should always answer yourself
Some questions have legal or factual consequences. Never let AI guess these: work authorization and visa sponsorship, security clearance, licenses and certifications, criminal history, and voluntary self-identification (gender, race, veteran or disability status). Answer them yourself, or leave optional ones blank.
Check before you paste
- Is every fact true?
- Did it copy the company's name and role correctly?
- Is it within the form's character limit?
