7 Common Job Application Mistakes (and How to Fix Them)
October 27, 2026 · 5 min read
Most rejected applications aren't rejected because the person couldn't do the job. They're rejected because of small, fixable mistakes that make the application easy to pass over. Here are the seven we see most often.
1. Sending the same resume everywhere
A generic resume matches no job well. Tailor your summary, skills order and top bullets to each job description. Our step-by-step guide shows how.
2. Applying to jobs you don't fit
Mass-applying feels productive but lowers your response rate. Before applying, check the must-have requirements. If you meet most of them, apply. If you meet few, spend that time on a better match.
3. Skipping the cover letter when it's optional
An optional cover letter is a chance to stand out. Three short paragraphs are enough: why this role, the two most relevant things you've done, and a polite close.
4. Rushing the screening questions
Questions like "Why do you want to work here?" or "Describe a project you led" are often read before the resume. Answer them specifically, with a real example, in four to six sentences.
5. Guessing on eligibility questions
Never guess on work authorization, sponsorship, clearance or license questions. A wrong answer can disqualify you later, even after an offer. Answer them yourself, carefully.
6. A resume the ATS can't read
Fancy templates with columns, tables, icons and text boxes often come out scrambled in applicant tracking systems. Use a simple single-column layout and save it as a PDF.
7. Not tracking where you applied
Without a tracker you can't follow up, prepare for calls, or learn what works. Keep a simple list with the company, role, date, status and next step.
